Meet Report

A beautiful warm sunny day, excellent visibility in the forest and few bugs made for an ideal day for orienteering resulting in some excellent performances. .

Due to late approval from the NCC (Friday evening) it was necessary to make last minute changes to the Advanced Long and Short courses. Both courses were shortened and made a bit easier - the Long course changes resulted in two lengthy trail/road runs while the Short was reduced by .8 km.

Advanced Long. I estimated the best time would be around 68-73 but Emily Kemp (63:00) and Frederic Bedard (65:00) were well under my predictions. John Ranson and Petr Polivka, both in 73:00, also had fine runs. Special mention of Adam Rudner. Adam was the last participant to start (and finish). Unfortunately, the clock had been stopped and his exact time is not known, but around 150:00. Adam had a special handicap - his 15 month old daughter accompanied him in a backpack. She was a bit vexed at the finish, but after a few bits of food she was smiling and looking very pleased.

Advanced Short. Did I ever get this one wrong. Even with the reduction in course length I estimated the best time would be around 50-55 minutes. There were two times of 38:00 and 3 others under 50 minutes. The excellent visibility certainly helped seeing features well ahead but these are very good times.

Intermediate. I thought that with the lack of foliage and thick underbrush this was an good time to give more bush navigation and less trail running than normal. For some this was OK but for a couple of groups stepping up from Beginner course and with small children in the group the rough ground and climbing proved a bit much with the groups cutting the course short. .

Thanks as usual to Caroline Phillips and Irene Jensen for Registration duties control pick-up assistance and Kelsey Robin for putting out the Beginner course controls.
