Ottawa Orienteering Club Rogaine - 2-hour and 8-hour Events

Sunday, October 24, 2010 Gatineau (Hull sector), Québec (Ottawa-Gatineau area)

A Rogaine is an event in which participants travel cross country on foot to locate checkpoints using only a map and compass to guide them. Unlike classic orienteering, there is no predetermined sequence of controls, but rather a time limit. Orienters may visit as many or as few checkpoints - or "controls" - as they wish, in any order they wish, as long as they return to the finish before the time limit is reached. For more information about this type of course, visit the International Rogaining Federation (www.rogaining.com).

The event course will cover an area of 22-km² (6-km² for the 2-hour).  It will have a different flavour this year having the start and finish area in a more urban environment.  The Hull sector holds several undeveloped areas, including the south end of Gatineau Park, making this location a very interesting venue. All competitors all welcomed, whether you are competitive or just want to have a nice hike.

Each control will be worth a certain number of points, with the value determined by different level of difficulty (beginner, intermediate and advanced). A severe penalty will be assessed for finishing overtime. The event will take place rain or shine, so dress properly. The average temperature for Gatineau Park at the end of October is 10 °C for the maximum (50°F) and 2°C for the minimum (36°F).

Even though rogaining is usually a team sport, solos are accepted for the 2h event.
