Lac Beauchamp Night-O Results

It was a clear, crisp night at Lac Beauchamp with only a tiny sliver of moon lighting an otherwise very dark woods. After a short briefing about the score-O format and how to get back if lost, forty-five fearless orienteers ventured into the spooky woods in search of 25 controls carefully hung on trail junctions, hill tops and, to test the advanced orienteers, a few elusive flags tucked in long re-entrants and deep depressions.

The mass start format ensured that orienteers had lots of company for the first few controls but many soon found themselves alone as runners dispersed into the woods and along the trails, all challenged with the task of navigating by flashlight. The cool night air and the fear of the unknown lurking in the forest can be exhilarating and a definite adrenaline experience. However, it is comforting when one notices the shine of a fellow competitor’s headlamp bobbing through the terrain in search of the same control site.

Ottawa OC’s juniors dominated the results, collecting all of the controls well before the 60 minute time limit. It took me two and a half hours to put out all the flags in full daylight and only 43 minutes for Emily to find them all in the dark of night. Below is Emily’s route, an estimated distance of 6.2 km, and the order in which she collected the controls: 9, 10, 1, 11, 2, 12, 15, 3, 4, 19, 5, 18, 21, 23, 17, 6, 16, 7, 13, 8, 14, 22, 24, 20, 25 and finish.
