SNOWSHOE ORIENTEERING

Nakkertok Nordic Ski Club  March 14, 2010

In case of bad weather or unsafe trail conditions the meet may be cancelled. Check this site for confirmation before setting out. Any notice will be posted by 8:30 the day of the meet.

WHY: Changed from a Ski-O because there are 5 Kms of new, marked snowshoe trails at Nakkertok and the snow is disappearing on the regular ski trails. There are lots of safe short-cut possibilities so the point to point courses will offer a lot of route choice.

WHO: For everyone who loves a challenge or just wants to get out on some beautiful trails and scenic forest. There will be three different courses: Short and easy (~3K), Medium (~6K), and Long (~9+K) Instruction will be available for beginners. Do it for fun or try to be the fastest in your age category.

WHAT: It's orienteering on snowshoes with a "blank" trail map. No trail numbers or other signage to confuse you. ; )  Look at the sample map on the left. The map includes the regular ski trails in green, the marked (with yellow flagging) snowshoe trails in red, and indistinct snowshoe paths with a dashed red line.

Snowshoers must always run on the outside edges of the ski trails and be watchful for fast skiers when crossing the ski trails in hilly areas.

EQUIPMENT: You must wear snowshoes all the time. Running in boots will make a mess of the snowshoe trails and the soft ski trails. You will receive the course map in a plastic case at the start. Bring a compass that you can attach to your wrist. We have some for rent if you do not have your own.  If you plan to go out on one of the longer courses please carry your own hydration/energy supplies. There will be water and other refreshments at the start/finish.

If you don't have snowshoes, Trailhead rents them for $15 a day or $25 for the weekend. Call 613 722-4229 for info.

We will be using the Sport Ident timing system but we will also have regular punches and punch cards for non-SI users.

If you would like to make a ski-O map holder to leave your hands free for poling look HERE.

COSTS: $9 for juniors (under 21) and $12 for seniors. These fees include a $5 Nakkertok non-member daily usage fee. Nakkertok members only pay $4 and $7 respectively.

PRE-NOTIFICATION IS REQUESTED so we will have an ample supply of maps. If you plan to come, please register through the ZONE4 link in the registration column of the schedule page. We will collect the fees at the site registration desk and ask you to sign a waiver. Be sure to check your email if you subscribe to our Yahoo list Sunday morning if weather causes any possibilities of cancellation. Last minute notices will also be posted on this web site.
