Train to Train Program

Our Train to Train program is our program for those in the Train to Train stages of Orienteering Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (the Train to Train stages loosely correspond to teenagers). This is a new program for Orienteering Ottawa as of 2018. Our goal is to create a program that:

  • is fun and enjoyable (for someone who wants to pursue orienteering with a view to racing competitively);
  • is focused on building navigation, training, and overall sport skills;
  • teaches and supports athletes to approach competitive orienteering with dedication, commitment, and passion;
  • fosters a strong bond between participants so that they train together and push each other outside of the program setting;
  • builds athletes that can be role models for others in the club;
  • helps parents support their young athletes in their competitive orienteering goals.

Young athletes who have enjoyed the Learn to Train program and are interested in training multiple times a week and competing in orienteering should consider registering for the Train to Train program. We are also open to athletes with backgrounds from other sports in the Train to Train age range (~13-17). Program Structure and Schedule

The Train to Train program is designed as a yearly program divided into spring and fall seasons with summer travel and races if desired. We encourage participants to sign up for the entire year but do offer the option to sign up for one season at a time.

The 2019 spring season will be 11 weeks from the week of April 8th to the week of June 17th.
The 2019 fall season will be 10 weeks from September 9th to the week of November 11th.

Each season will start with a program meeting for parents and athletes to discuss the season. The spring season meeting is tentatively scheduled for April 4th from 6:30 to 8:00.

Spring and Fall regular training

The spring and fall seasons include 3 training sessions per week:

Wednesday: Running training with coach Francis Kawam. 6:00 - 7:30 pm mostly at Frank Ryan park at Stuart Kettles St and Maplewood Ave but sometimes alternative nearby locations for some variety.

Thursday: Navigation training with head coach Jeff Teutsch with the Thursday Navigation Training program in April and May. These sessions are from 6:30 to 8:00 each week in a different location (in the West End stretching from downtown to north of Kanata). See the Thursday Navigation Training page for the schedule. After the last of these sessions we will either continue with our own sessions on Thursday evenings or switch to include the Summer Solstice Series on Tuesday evening.

Sunday: Coaching from head coach Jeff Teutsch at and participation in our Spring and Fall Series Events (Series du printemps et d'automne) on Sunday mornings (10:00 am to 12:30 pm). On weekends when there isn't a series event we may schedule an alternative session.

Additional coaching support: Our experienced coaches will also provide advice on what else athletes should be doing during the week, and injury, nutrition, and other support and advice.

Out of Town Events: We will be arranging one coach supported trip to an out-of-town weekend orienteering event per season. See information below.

Competitions

The Train to Train program includes participation in several age class competitions (as well as the club's Spring Training Weekend) throughout the year (see list below). We also will be providing some organized program trips with coaching support to out-of-town events in 2019. The following table shows all the events athletes can compete in.

All of these events have additional registration fees not included in the base program fee. For the West Point event, Canada Championships, and Ontario Championships there will be an additional fee to cover coaching and trip fees.

More information will be sent to registered participants in mid March.
