Orienteering Ottawa – Job opportunity for youth

Orienteering Ottawa is hiring two youths for mapping schoolyards and parks in the Kanata and West Carleton area this summer.  The hiring is funded by the federal government’s Canada Summer Jobs Program grant.

Job description: Mapping of schoolyards and park areas, including base map setup, fieldwork, and drafting using OCAD or OpenOrienteeringMapper (OOM). The work is roughly half-time computer work (base map preparation and drafting) and half-time field checking. The field checking is outdoors and requires being on your feet and walking for long periods of time.

Age restriction: To be considered the applicant must be between 15 and 30 years old.

Work Dates: July 5 to Aug 27, 2021 (8 weeks).

Work hours: 24 hours per week.

Salary: $18.00 per hour

Work Locations: Field work at many different schools and parks around Kanata and West Carleton. The computer work is to be done at the worker’s home.

Equipment needs: Cell phone (for safety and contact when doing field work) and access to computer and printer for base map setup and drafting.

Experience required: Good knowledge about the sport of orienteering as a competitor, and familiarity with the orienteering map specifications (ISOM2017 and ISprOM2019). Computer skills to download and organize geographical information from multiple sources for base map setup, and to use the map drafting software (OCAD or OOM). Previous mapping experience is not required, but an interest in learning how to map for orienteering and to improve as a competitor is essential.

Transportation: The applicant must have his/her own transportation to the fieldwork locations in Kanata and West Carleton.

Mentoring and supervision: The hired workers will be instructed, mentored, and supervised during the work period.
