Successful Completion of North American O Champs
The North American O Championships have completed with Canada taking both the senior and junior trophies. Once again, the team of volunteers from Orienteering Ottawa hosted some challenging courses and great camaraderie for all. Starting with a junior camp for young people to meet friends from across the country, have technical training, games, and social activities.
In Kingston participants were treated with a series of sprint events in the historic part of Kingston, through the penitentiary and finishing on the waterfront and Queen's University. With 365 participants and many, many volunteers, orienteering was introduced to this city and their new orienteering club, the Frontenac legends. Andrew Cornett, Jeff Teutsch and Jennie Anderson kept everyone challenged and active with the three sprint events.
Activity then moved to the Calabogie Ski resort for the Middle and Long events. Here is a cool animation of the M21 Long event . No, not everyone got to run that far! The courses were scaled for all 450+ participants. Kudos to the course setting team of Peter Laurich, Stefan Bergstrom and Marketa Graham.
At the final awards presentations, in addition to the individual awards and the team cups a new award was introduced in honour of Brian Graham. This beautiful carved award was crafted by Alexander Bergstrom of Orienteering Ottawa.
Congratulations to Anne Teutsch, her planning committee of Stefan, Andrew, Brian and Cherie and to all those many club members and friends who pitched in to make it a very successful event.
